Lenovo Tech World 2016 to Showcase First Project Tango Smartphone – and More

Lenovo’s annual technology event, Tech World, will return for a second time this year. After the inaugural event in its home base in Beijing, the company is holding its event at the heart of global technological innovation: San Francisco.

It says a lot that the Chinese giants is holding its event in the city, especially considering that the keynote will take place days before Apple’s WWDC kicks off…in San Francisco as well. It is in line with the company’s ambition and vision of no longer being just a PC or smartphone company.

This year’s Tech World will see at least two major announcements from Lenovo. The first is the official announcement of the world’s first Project Tango smartphone. First announced at CES 2016, and further teased at MWC 2016, Lenovo will finally take the wraps off the device for the first time next month.

These screenshots from the video hints that 2015’s concept smartphone with a pico projector may be officially revealed this year.

Next, and just as exciting, is likely to be the official launch of the new Moto X smartphone. From what we gather from the rumours so far – and the official press release for Tech World – it is very likely that the Moto X will follow in the footsteps of the LG G5 and offer modular backplates that changes the Moto X’s features “in a snap”.

But as with the first Tech World, Lenovo will also use the event to showcase some interesting new ideas and innovations from its R&D labs. According to Lenovo, there will be concept devices that are the product of hundreds of Lenovo and Motorola engineers, designers, and developers across three continents.

It is also likely that other announcements will be made there, as CEO Yang Yuanqing will be making a keynote address – the official preview video also shows off some unrecognisable new devices. In a statement, Yang adds:

“Lenovo is no longer just a PC or Smartphone company. Lenovo will play a role in developing new smart devices, delivering the smart connectivity required to enable new services and experiences, and providing the infrastructure that makes the new connected world possible. At Tech World 2016, we’ll share our latest technologies, launch some of our most important products, and – along with some of our friends and partners – showcase our vision for the future of technology.”
