Viber Announces End-to-End Encryption for its Phone Calls and Messages

Value your privacy, especially in your conversations with friends and families? Viber has got some good news for you, the company recently announced that all the conversations exchanged on its platform now has end-to-end encryption, allowing over 700 million users to communicate securely.

Like what WhatsApp did recently, all conversations are now encrypted including one-to-one messages, group chats, as well as calls. Viber says that this is applicable for all Viber platforms, be it on mobile, tablet, and even desktop. Viber says that they have been working on this for a long time, and it will be rolled out globally over the next two weeks.

Secured chats will have a grey padlock in the conversation, and users can manually authenticate contacts as “trusted”, which will turn the padlock green. If the padlock turns red, it means that there is a problem with the authentication key – either because the other party changed their phone, or there is an attack going on. To solve this, simply authenticate the contact again.

In addition to announcing end-to-end authentication, Viber also announced Hidden Chats, allowing users to hide specific chats from the main screen so no one knows they exist. This comes in handy for users who share devices (computers or tablets) with their family.

It’s definitely great to see services like WhatsApp and Viber beefing up their security to provide a better service to its users.
