AMD Unveils Budget-Oriented Radeon R3 Series SSDs

AMD has announced the latest addition in its Solid State Drive linenup in the form of the budget-oriented Radeon R3 series SSDs. According to AMD, its latest 2.5-inch R3 series SSDs are designed to perform well without costing a fortune. AMD describes the Radeon R3 SSDs as “superior in value and performance.”

AMD’s Radeon R3 SSDs comes in four different storage variants: 120GB, 240GB, 480GB, and 960GB. On average, the maximum read speeds for all variants of the R3 series SSDs are recorded at 540MBps. Meanwhile, write speeds vary from 360MBps up to 470MBps, which is on par with other, more expensive SSDs in the market.

The controller used in AMD’s Radeon R3 series SSDs are the Silicon Motion SM2256KX. Interface-wise, the R3 series SSDs will be utilising the SATA 3 interface, instead of the faster PCIe interface. In addition, the R3 series SSDs will be equipped with a TLC (Tri-level Cell) Nand array, which is significantly cheaper compared to SLC (Single-level) and MLC (Multi-level cell) SSDs.

Price-wise, the 120GB variant of the Radeon R3 series SSDs will retail for US$41 (about RM160), while the 240GB model will be priced at US70 (approximately RM279). The larger 480GB variant will be sold for US$137 (around RM506); no price was given for the 980GB model however. All Radeon R3 series SSDs will come with a three-year warranty as well.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any information given by AMD about the availability of the Radeon R3 series SSDs in Malaysia, but we do expect them to be made available soon. More information about the Radeon R3 series SSDs can be found here.
