Sony Files Patent for Contact Lens Capable of Video Recording

Sony has filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office for what could be a smart contact lens that can take photos and videos.

The new patent which was originally filed in May 2013 describes the contact lens as “Contact Lens And Storage Medium”. According the filing, the contact lens houses an imaging sensor, its own data storage and a wireless communication module. The lens will also feature an organic electroluminescence display screen, and users will be able to operate the lens via deliberate blinking. Embedded sensors allow the system to differentiate between voluntary and involuntary blinks.

Besides basic photos and videos taking, the smart contact lens is also capable of zooming, autofocus and image stabilisation. Capable of being a full-fledged imaging device, it is also able to record, store and playback content.

Back in 2014, Google has filed a patent for a smart contact lens that is capable of monitoring the wearer’s glucose level. Samsung jumped on the bandwagon the same year by patenting a smart contact lens with a built-in camera. Of course, as all patents go it is only theoretical until an actual products shows up.
