Report: Apple Watch 2 Will Come With Cellular Support

Remember when Apple started to tell developers that starting 1 June 2016, all Apple Watch apps must be native, meaning that they must be able to work without the aid of an iPhone? Well, it looks like Apple has bigger plans for the Apple Watch apart from making apps run faster. The Apple Watch 2 could be a completely standalone product that is fully functional even without an iPhone.

The Wall Street Journal reports that according to “people familiar with the matter”, Apple is working on bringing cellular connectivity to the Apple Watch 2, along with a faster processor as well. This is nothing new of course, other companies like Samsung and LG already have wearables with LTE connectivity,

Apple has never released any Apple Watch sales numbers, but according to WSJ, the Cupertino company has sold twice as many Apple Watches during its first year as iPhones during its first year. Apple sold over 5.8 million iPhones during its first four quarters on the market. Let’s hope that the upcoming quarterly earnings report for January to March gives us an official insight to the numbers.

Apple is expected to launch the Watch 2 at its upcoming WWDC 2016 happening in mid-June. Let’s hope that apart from making the Apple Watch independent from an iPhone, the Cupertino company also gave the wearable some much needed performance and battery improvements as well.
