Opera Browser Introduces Free Built-In VPN

Opera has become the first major browser to include a VPN client in its product. More importantly, the client is free to use with no limits on bandwidth or usage time. Of course, it isn’t fully ready for mass consumption just yet either; as Opera is only making the VPN available through its developer channel for now.

Opera says that its team of engineers has been working on making web browsing more efficient; which is why it decided to include a VPN service. This follows the development of a native ad blocker for Opera’s browser; a feature that many other browsers leave to third party addons.

VPNs are often used to mask the true IP address of a user, allowing them to access content that would usually not be available to a particular country. It also provides an additional layer of privacy as it prevents sites from tracking users across the internet.

That being said, there is a limitation to Opera’s VPN. This particular virtual network only redirects browser traffic through the company servers, leaving messenger and email clients to work without the additional layer of privacy.

At the moment, Opera only has VPN servers in the US, Canada, and Germany. The company says that it will be expanding the number of available servers over time. There are also plans for the feature to be added to Opera’s mobile browser, although that will probably have to wait until the VPN comes out of development on the desktop browser.
